JUDGING CRITERIA
1. Ability to introduce herself on stage and meet new people
2. Ability to share about her family and being Irish
3. Her overall well-roundedness in life – school, family,
extracurricular, service, etc.
4. Poise and manners
5. Written Essay
6. Finalists will present their Essay on stage
This program is designed to introduce Irish American girls ages 13
through17 years old and their families to the Arizona Colleen
Pageant Program. Two titleholders of Arizona Outstanding Irish Teen
will be recognized on stage during the selection night for the
Arizona Colleen. A prize will be awarded each young woman.

You may select ONE from among three topics that are chosen each
year. The Personal Essay Sample details the structure,
guidelines, and how to submit it to us. Relax and have fun.
There may be an opportunity to "present" the essay so best to
keep it in a comfortable flow that reflects your personality and
style. These may be about a challenge or obstacle you've
overcome or a topic that demonstrates your aspirations,
ambitions, intellect, social responsibility, or Irish heritage.
The subject may be something like who is your favorite Irish
American and why? Where do you want to visit in Ireland and why?
The work must be your own, however you may have your draft
proofed by someone else for typographical and grammatical
errors.
The 2008 Teen topics are:
1. How would you describe a good role model for young women
today?
2. What woman in past or present history do you admire the most
and why?
3. What do you feel the Irish have contributed to society in the
U.S.?
SCORING
The following weights are placed on the phases of competition:
Application 10%
On-Stage Speaking (Introduction) 10%
On-Stage Interview with Judges 25%
On-Stage Question about being Irish 10%
Poise and manners 20%
Essay 25%
Total 100%
FIVE FINALISTS:
On-Stage Essay Reading – 10 points
EVENT – Sunday, January 27, 2008, 6-9 pm
A handout will list the contestants and sponsors. A casual event
overall, casual business or dresses for the contestants. Natural
hairstyles are required for contestants. Teens will be presented
before the judges individually with an opportunity for each to make
an introduction and then for each to interact with the judges’ panel
in a comfortable setting. Location: Irish Cultural Center, Phoenix
Finalists will be selected to read/present their essay on-stage.
Titleholders will be announced and presented with sash and prize
package.
DUTIES
Titleholders will participate in the Arizona Colleen Pageant and
will ride in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. They are invited to
participate in area events throughout their reign.
PRIZES
Titleholders debuted at the 2008 Arizona Colleen Pageant;
received tickets to Childsplay's A Tale of Two Cities at the Tempe Center for
the Arts; tickets to Greasepaint Youtheatre's musical Into the Woods at
Stagebrush Theatre in Scottsdale; tickets to the 2008 Emerald Ball in Phoenix;
rode in the 2008 St. Patrick's Day Parade; on-stage at the 2008 St. Patrick's
Day Faire; guests of the Queen at Celtic events at the Arizona Renaissance
Festival; tickets to Arizona Science Center's Titanic Exhibit and participated
in their "Third Class Bash;" bouquet of flowers; monogrammed duffle bag designed
for the event from It's in the Bag; and rode in the Tolleson, Arizona parade.
